reasons for an extraction?

Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

  1. Severe Decay or Damage
When a tooth is extensively decayed or broken beyond repair, it may need to be extracted to prevent further infection and pain. If a filling or crown cannot restore the tooth, removal is the best option.

  2. Gum Disease
Advanced periodontal disease can weaken the bone supporting the teeth, causing them to loosen. If the tooth cannot be saved through deep cleaning or surgery, extraction may be necessary to prevent further damage.

  3. Overcrowding
In some cases, teeth may be too large for the jaw, causing misalignment. To create space for orthodontic treatment, a tooth may need to be extracted to allow proper alignment of the remaining teeth.

  4. Impacted Teeth
When a tooth, such as a wisdom tooth, is trapped under the gums or grows at an improper angle, it can cause pain and swelling. Removing the impacted tooth prevents infection and other complications.

  5. Infection
If a tooth infection spreads to the pulp and cannot be treated with a root canal, extraction may be the only way to prevent the spread of bacteria to other teeth and the jawbone.

  6. Fractured Tooth
A tooth that is broken below the gum line or has a deep vertical fracture may not be restorable. In such cases, removing the tooth is necessary to avoid pain and infection.

  7. Preparation for Dentures or Implants
When a patient needs full or partial dentures or dental implants, damaged or weak teeth may need to be extracted to ensure a proper fit and long-term oral health.
